Homeowners Remodel Basement Floor to Achieve Improved Aesthetics and Functionality

Background:

A couple of homeowners wanted to maximize their house's potential and better utilize the basement.  To start, they needed a functional, attractive and easy-to-clean floor.  The 15-year-old carpet was outdated, difficult to maintain and stain-ridden. It had to go.

Contractor:

Founded in 1990, Elite Concrete Design and M.L.Wilson, LLC install seamless epoxy floor coatings, specializing in concrete repair, decorative concrete finishes, seamless resinous coatings, interior and exterior floors, and residential and commercial floors.  Elite Concrete Design is located in Sherherdstown, West Virginia, serving the Eastern Panhandle and surrounding areas.

Solution:

Elite Concrete Design introduced the homeowners to Super-Krete® ColorChrome™ System, a high-performance metallic flooring system utilized in both residential and commercial projects.

The Installation Process:

  • The contractor used diamond grinding to prep the floor, followed by an acid wash vacuum to reduce the mess.
  • Once dry, an off-white water-based epoxy primer was applied.
  • Next, Graphite and Mercury-colored metallic pigments were added to SK-E400, which is a 100% solids epoxy.  8 ounces of Graphite-colored metallic powder were added per kit of high build epoxy, as was 8 ounces of Mercury-colored metallic powder.  The two colors were applied simultaneously to the floor using a notched squeegee, then back rolled with a 1/4-inch mohair roller.  After 36 hours, three coats of 27% solids acrylic liquid floor wax were applied with a pad applicator.
